Constructed Wetland Treatment of Nitrates: Removal Effectiveness and Cost Efficiency
نویسندگان
چکیده
A constructed wetland (CW) was strategically placed to treat nitrates in groundwater as part of a watershed-based farmer engagement process. Using stream water quality data collected before and after installation, this CW was found to reduce stream concentrations of nitrogen from nitrate (NO3-N) during the growing season by about 0.14 mg/l at mean streamflow, a 17% reduction. Based upon realistic ecological and economic assumptions, about 80 kg of NO3-N were removed annually by the CW at a cost of around US$30/kg. This per unit cost is at the low range of small wastewater treatment plant costs for nitrates, but higher than the costs of reduced fertilizer application. Nutrient removal efficiency by floating macrophytes; Lemna minor and Azolla pinnata in a constructed wetland
The use of constructed wetlands for purifying pre-treated wastewater is a cost effective technology that has been found to be more appropriate for many developing countries. The technology is also environmentally friendly with the wetlands being habitats for many water birds and other aquatic organisms. This study assessed nutrient removal efficiency of two floating macrophytes (Lemna minor...
متن کاملRemoval of Pharmaceutical Products in a Constructed Wetland
Background: There is growing interest in the natural and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. While nutrient removal in wetlands has been extensively investigated, information regarding the degradation of the pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has only recently been emerging. PPCPs are widely distributed in urban wastewaters and can be removed to some extent by the con...

Background and Objective: Reactive Red 198 is a mono azo dye widely used in the textile industry of Iran. The toxicity of reactive dyes is higher than other dyes and causes disorders such as irritation, cancer and mutation in humans. The overall objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of a Constructed Wetland pilot system with conventional and baffled horizontal subsurface flow ...
متن کاملAnammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance
This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...
